When Paul and Jim Van Doren began selling custom-made shoes from an Anaheim, Calif. storefront, they quickly gained a following of SoCal skateboarders. The kids embraced the rubber-soled kicks for their reliable grip on the longboard and their easy, relaxed design.

Paul and Jim took care to listen to what their young customers had to say and began creating shoes specifically made for the up-and-coming sport of “sidewalk surfing.”  The company changed its name from The Van Doren Rubber Shoe Company to the much more casual moniker Vans, and a new era was born.
