Nike Pushing the limits of sport
It’s hard to believe the largest athletic shoe company on the planet got its start in a modest Portland storefront as a distributor for Japanese-based Onitsuka Tiger (known today as ASICS).
In 1964, University of Oregon track coach Bill Bowerman and alumnus Phil Knight decided to turn their Blue Ribbon Sports venture into what would become a game-changing manufacturer of quality athletic shoes and apparel. With roots in track and field, Knight and Bowerman launched Nike and built it into a high-profile brand that has become synonymous with sneakers and sports culture.
Tailwind, basketball, and “Just Do It”
In 1979, the Tailwind was launched, marking the first shoe with iconic Air technology. This state-of-the-art shoe featured gas-filled plastic membranes that were inserted into the sole to soften impact. Fast-forward eight years, and Air tech was revolutionizing the world of sneakers — not only was it incorporated into basketball shoes such as the iconic Air Force 1, Air technology was also becoming a fashion statement with cool designs and colorways. In 1987, legendary Nike designer Tinker Hatfield exposed the air bubble to the world with the Air Max 1 and cemented its place in sneaker culture.
Nike clinched icon status when they signed a young basketball star named Michael Jordan to endorse their shoes. Though he was at first reluctant to join the Swoosh, Jordan signed on, and is now a brand of his own.
In 1988, the “Just Do It” tagline was coined at an ad agency meeting. It has since become one of the most recognized taglines in the world.
